UnderGround Forums DC: Dana and Lorenzo gave me $1 million

Daniel Cormier fought Jon Jones twice, losing both, although the second fight, in 2016, was changed to a No Contest and DC's belt reinstated after Jones tested positive for metabolites of the steroid Turinabol. During a recent episode of the DC and Helwani Show, Cormier revealed for the first time that following the loss at UFC 182 in 2015, he got a locker room bonus of $1 million.

“After I had lost to Jon Jones, Lorenzo Fertitta gave me a million dollars," said Cormier. "Him and Dana gave me a million dollars. They actually called me and said, ‘We are going to give you a million dollars for the job that you’ve done.”

“So when people say, ‘Wow you made $80k to fight Jon Jones and that was a big pay-per-view...’ No, they gave me a million dollars. I didn’t get PPV [points], I was just a challenger fighting a guy who has defended his belt all those times.”

Cormier said further that for his next fight, a win vs. Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 for the vacant title, he made another $1 million. His reported contract was for 90/90, but that DC said his actual base pay was $300,000, he got another $300,000 from PPV points, and a locker room bonus of $400,000.

“So when people talk about ‘You’re a white knight for the UFC’ why wouldn’t I be?" he argued. "They changed my life."

The federal government can tax a "bonus" up to something like 60% if I recall correctly, I hope DC paid uncle Sam before this hit the web.

Damn that's some major cash. So...as a Cali resident, does he have to give 1/2 back to the state in taxes, or is he scott free since the fight was in Nevada?

White Knight or not I’m sure even DC could agree that most fighters deserve a bit more pay so they don’t need 2nd and third jobs as a Pro.

I don’t think they gave him cash in a bag that he’s hiding under his bed.  And a transaction like that into his account is going to be highly visible.

Everything’s connected now and not a good idea to try to hide anything significant like that.

It is taxed like any other income and subject to the normal tax brackets.

He pays state tax where the event was.

Nice. I'm glad he was treated well. I think he's a good draw. I like to watch his fights.

Devils advocate here: if someone deserves getting paid multi-millions but you pay them a few hundred thousand instead, then give them a big million dollar bonus after, they’re happy as shit with the big money gesture and you still underpaid them by millions.
