Fedor vs. Sonnen and Bader vs. Mitrione planned for mid October
Bellator's awesome MMA World Grand Prix 2018 heavyweight tournament Opening Round is now complete:
•Chael Sonnen beat ‘Rampage’ Jackson via Unanimous Decision at Bellator 192 on January 20.
•Matt Mitrione beat Roy Nelson via Majority Decision at Bellator 194 on February 16, 2018.
•Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir at Bellator 196 on April 28.
•Ryan Bader vs. Muhammed Lawal at Bellator 199 on May 12.
Bellator MMA president Scott Coker tells Mike Bohn for MMAjunkie that Fedor vs. Sonnen and Bader vs. Mitrione will take place in mid-October. They will not both be held on the same card, but events on back to back nights is a possibility. Fedor vs. Sonnen could take place in Chicago.
“We’re trying to keep it in close proximity,” said Coker. “I want both of the semifinals to happen close together.”
In the other semi-final fight, light heavyweight champion will look at become the promotion's first two-division belt holder. He will be fighting Mitrione, who edged past Roy Nelson in a controversial Majority Decision.
Tournament alternates are Javy Ayala and Cheick Kongo.
